Abhaya Nayak

After the completion of his Doctoral research at the University of Rochester on the interface between Philosophy and Artificial Intelligence (AI), Associate Professor Abhaya Nayak moved to Australia for post-doctoral research in the early 1990s. He worked at both the University of Sydney and at the University of New South Wales (UMSW) as a postdoctoral research fellow in AI before joining Macquarie University Sydney as an academic in 1999. His research work largely focusses on classical symbolic AI (Good Old-Fashioned AI – GOFAI). He is well-published, internationally well regarded in his area of research, and has significantly contributed to Macquarie University in different roles. Most recently he led the development of two nascent academic programs in AI at Macquarie University: Master of Information Technology in Artificial Intelligence and Bachelor of Information Technology (AI Major) and he is currently the Director of these two programs. His current research interest is Ethical AI which broadly revolves around societal aspects of AI.
